Sycle’s Fyansford waste transfer and resource recovery centre has set a new standard for responsible waste management in the greater Geelong region, diverting 30% of waste from landfill by salvaging and repurposing construction materials.
Fyansford has so far maintained this milestone for six consecutive months, recovering timber, steel, and concrete for reuse in local road, building, and landscaping projects.
“Since taking over the Fyansford landfill business in November 2021, we have invested heavily in transforming the site into a safer, cleaner and more efficient waste transfer station facility and not just landfill,” said Ari Karavias, Sycle Executive General Manager.
“Our facility plays a crucial part in managing a large portion of the waste generated in the Geelong region as we continue to enhance recycling and recovery practices with a strong focus on safety, environmental protection, and community health,” said Karavias.
“As a critical piece of Victorian waste management infrastructure and a clear vision for a circular economy, we will continue to invest in technology to further unlock recovery opportunities”, Karavias continued.
The Fyansford site plays a key part of Sycle’s resource recovery facility network in Melbourne’s west, demonstrating materials waste management can coexist safely and sustainably within a metropolitan community.
Most of the recovered materials from Fyansford are processed through Sycle’s Avalon operations, where they are remanufactured into high-quality recycled products such as topsoils, mulches, aggregates, and reclaimed asphalt. This reduces landfill dependency and supports a more circular construction industry.
Sycle continues to invest in site amenities, landscaping, and environmental protection measures – reinforcing its commitment to facilities that contribute positively to their surroundings. Under EPA permit requirements and Green Star accreditation, the company is focused on operating the facility to high safety, sustainability, and community responsibility standards.
